Bhumi question traditions, race, culture and identity while living a contemporary lifestyle in a home away from home. This multidisciplinary production is an attempt to marry traditional Malay music and dance with contemporary music and dance.
Home. Singapore. Departure. Arrival. London. Home. 'I’m Z, short form for a name that you probably can’t pronounce and I’m trying to find my place in the world.' Bhumi (Sanskrit for earth or soil) is a multi-disciplinary theatrical performance by a collective of Singapore Malay artists based in London. They are at the crossroads of their artistic identity, wrangling with questions about traditions, race, culture and identity while living a contemporary lifestyle in a home away from home. Bhumi addresses what it means to be Melayu (Malay) through a marriage of traditional and contemporary Malay dance forms.
